I've been such the angry feminist lately! I'm not sure when it started (maybe when I unloaded all my feminist magazines on eBay a few weeks ago?) but I've been seeing the patriarchy everywhere!
Today I was half watching I Love the '70s on VH-1 and half rearranging my office. The strains of Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman" drew me to the monitor.
I am woman, hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an' pretend
'Cause I've heard it all before
And I've been down there on the floor
No one's ever gonna keep me down again
I loved this song as a little girl. It made me feel so proud of my single mom when we would sing along to the Helen Reddy 8-track in our family car! I waited to see what the lame celebrity panel had to say about that song and its place in the feminist movement. Oddly, the celebs featured were all men. And they made fun of it. And then talked about bra burning and how cool that was (because it makes boobs easier to see, I guess).
I was so annoyed. VH-1 doesn't seem to have a problem lining up the B-listers to talk about damn near anything, but for the feminist movement all they could come up with was some smug booby talk? Jebus! There was a time when you couldn't flip past that channel without seeing Melissa Etheridge discussing her feelings about Bruce Springsteen and every other topic under the sun but they couldn't ring her up to talk about '70s grrrl power?
Of course, this is just one in a long line of grievances in the past few days.
I got irrationally angry while watching Modern Masters (an HGTV artisan showcase) because I feel they show a disproportionate number of male-dominated fields, while women artisans and traditionally female arts (like quilting or weaving) are marginalized and relegated to a segment on Carol Duval (in between the latest uses for floral tape and new scrapbook supplies).
Maybe I need to watch less TV.
