I think everybody is entitled to his or her opinion. Apparently the folks at Boycott Hollywood don’t agree.
I understand the desire to tell people to shut up — oh, do I ever! — but I can’t abide by people who want to limit the free speech of a whole group, even a group as over-exposed and generally silly as the rich and famous.
I figured such a group would be opposed to the Ahnold race in California and even, in theory, to the Reagan presidency but, oddly, that doesn’t seem to be the case. They’re really just mad that some liberal-leaning celebs use their position to further their causes! *gasp*
One of their recent entries amused me endlessly! One of the boycotters pulled an alert from StopMediaRegulation.org that was about the funniest thing I’ve ever read:
Liberals in Congress have recently launched a major assault on conservative media by proposing sweeping regulations of mass media — regulations designed to muzzle popular conservative talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Bill O’Reilly. The liberal onslaught includes an attempt to embarrass President Bush by rolling back a recent decision by Bush’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to de-regulate ownership of radio and TV stations. The June 2 FCC decision takes a major step towards deregulating mass media and allowing the free market — and not government bureaucrats — to determine what voices should be heard.
The Left’s regulatory attack doesn’t stop with rolling back the FCC’s decision. Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) recently announced the full liberal agenda, which includes reinstating the so-called “Fairness Doctrine” that was eliminated by President Reagan in 1987.
Bringing back the “Fairness Doctrine” would force stations to “balance” popular conservative talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh with liberal commentators — even if those liberals have little or no following. As a result, stations might be forced by economic reasons to stop airing popular conservative talk shows.
It makes me glad that none of the Boycott Hollywood folks are famous! We don’t need any more dumbasses spouting off about things they don’t understand! Hee!There are so many flaws in the logic of that piece (not the least of which is that the media regulation issue is a liberal one) that it’s pointless to break it down. At any rate, it seems that Boycott Hollywood falls into that popular conservative mindset: freedom of speech is fine as long as you toe the party line!
