PHP is a programming/scripting language you can use to make dynamic web pages. Notice how all the pages at madnono.com end in a .php extension? That's why. :) And the PHP option in posts will let you post bits of PHP code that won't get rendered by the page, but will instead display using contextual color coding to make the various tags, variables, etc. stick out. I think the reason they have the PHP option is because, well, mostly because the BB software itself runs on PHP, and their main message boards have people showing other users how to do various customization/foramtting/etc., so it's much easier to read the PHP coding if its color coded.

Ok, clarification!


So this is actually a whole huge deal that is way bigger than just a vbulletin exploit--it injected malicious code into wry single php file on the whole server (including files from defunct sites like pp.com, files that aren't even created by a software program like vbulletin). It's going to be a multi step, lengthy process to get this all fixed.

For the time being, it doesn't seem to be affecting my machine that is running the most up to date version of Firefox, so maybe encourage people to use that browser as a stopgap?

Apparently this is a huge attack that is affecting thousands of websites and started back in the fall, we just happened to get hit now. Tons of dreamhost sites started being affected in February, which is when the code first got injected onto our server, although the payload didn't go off until yesterday. Blah.


I'm not seeing any problems on Chrome using Windows 7.

I'm getting redirected to a malware warning for a sweepstakes page every time I click on any page here. Is that happening to everyone? I'm only able to post one attempt out of six. Doesn't matter what browser I use or what machine I am on (laptop, ipad, nook).

Assuming we can't get the hacking issue resolved, should we consider moving to a different forum platform? Maybe something free? Obvs, it would be lamer, but maybe more stable . . . and hosting fees and maintenance wouldn't be an issue anymore.

I can't believe I'm even suggesting moving from here. Blaspheme!

If it's not affecting anyone but me, then no big deal. I'll just work around.

I'm guessing this is why posting has slowed down so much over the past few days? I don't know if it has affected traffic, though, because you do still land here for a split second before it forces you off to the malware page. But there certainly seems to be fewer posts, so I'm guessing it most be affecting more than just me and Issie.

Does anyone know if this kind of thing puts our actual home computers at any risk? I'm so clueless.

I don't want to lose all of our content either, like we did when we left MBTV, and again when we left pp.com . . . but if it can't be fixed what are the options? Because it's getting worse every day.

I did poke around and create a madnono forum over on yuku.com which seems pretty stable, just to see if I could and to see if there were charges or security settings. It is free. If we wanted to try that out for awhile, we can set it as either public or as private . . . also, I'd be willing to copy over the last five posts in every thread that has been active in the past 30 days, so we don't lose the thread of conversation.

But! I'd rather just stay here, honestly, if something can be done.

Ok, ophy, try this. When you want to view threads, but it redirects you to the malware, refresh the malware page. I've been doing that and it always brings me to the page I wanted to look at. And then when I reply, I click on reply or reply with quote at the end of the last post and just delete the quote in the response box. I never use the "reply to thread" button anymore. If you're posting a long reply sometimes, it logs me off, but if my response is long, I just copy it before I hit post, just in case I've been logged off. And then I log back in and repost it.

It's not perfect, but it's been less of a hassle for me.

I use Chrome at home, but maybe I'll try FF just for this site and see if it works better. And I never clear my cache, so it should recognize it as safe. <kanye shrug>
